Meanwhile, back at the ranch - literally ;-) - there has been some progress! We have been graded, twice now, by Tourism TGCSA and are now boasting 2 stars since a year and a half ago already.

We'd like to keep our grading stars at 2 as we would like to stick to our organic, rustic (rustig), down to earth look & feel to appeal to our special visitors who love our cottages for their originality and homeliness (and cleanliness of course).

Improvements are ongoing, one step at a time, thus when you visit us for a second or fifth time, you will notice small or larger changes to the outside or within the cottages.

Our rates have remained on the same lines as before grading and the cottages remain well-maintained and clean at all times so that YOU, our guests, can feel comfortable and enjoy your stay to the utmost.

A month ago, June 2011, we had another flood which came down rather fast and broke the bank near River Sanctuary yet again, all beautifully packed and placed gabien baskets were dumped into the middle of the river - yet another display of how powerful nature is! The bank will be fixed in the next while ... pictures to be anticipated ;-) !

The previous flood, 2007, broke the bank (also the money bank) as well as flooding away the little bridge crossing the river before you get to River Sanctuary. This bridge was rebuilt bigger, better, higher and sturdier and, so far so good, it holds!!! Roger is a great bridge builder!

It seems that the drought has broken and the lack of water is no longer an issue...all farms around, in the area of Beyond the Moon farm, on the 7-passes road and near, seem to have full dams once again and everyone is feeling more relaxed once more.

Yet another year is sprinting to its end and everyone is beginning to plan their trip for the December holidays, thus, remember to make your bookings soon to allay disappointment. Carnival, Cape Town, March 2011

IDans festival, Istanbul

Straight after the Soccer World-Cup Creature-designing and building began for the very next project, called i-Kedi (Istanbul Cat) and is part of the yearly IDans festival in Turkey.

This time around only Roger and Mia were to be busy on the project . Since cats seem to play a major role in the life of Istanbulians Roger prepared to build 3 massive cats....

In August 20 the project i-Kedi was completed and very successful:

Roger recently returned from Istanbul where he created three 4M long cats that were operated from the back of a vehicle by local manipulators.

With the assistance of M!a van Zyl he also designed 5 smaller puppets that were built by the general public at workshops

around the city.

Over 20 teachers were employed and shown how to build the puppets. They in turn helped the citizens of Istanbul build 4500 puppets.

Due to the success of the project we will be repeating the exercise this year, 2011.

Beyond the Moon farm accommodation during the FIFA World-Cup 2010

June was the coldest and wettest time of the year and our cottages were full for the duration of the soccer world cup.

We accommodated a group of dancers who performed at the fan-park in George, on certain days, for MTN.

The day of their arrival was probably the coldest day of the year 2010 and some of the guys were put up in Kingfisher cottage which is famous for its open roof shower.

The co-ordinator of the dancers was very concerned for them and their comfort, so I called on Ian and he rushed out to purchase some roof sheets and covered the bathroom, some with a see-through product to maintain some of that open feeling.

Kingfisher cottage is no longer called the open roof bathroom BUT instead the ‘garden bathroom’ with the big window leading to the great view of the forest.

The kids/dancers and performers were initially alarmed at the setting of Beyond the Moon farm as we are surrounded by dairy farms and trees where they are used to life in the concrete jungle and traffic but soon they relaxed and enjoyed their visit tremendously.

By the end of the world-cup they had all become a little bit attached to their ‘home away from home’, having spent so much time here during the coldest spell ever, but then they were probably glad and looking forward to seeing some concrete again.

FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010

The first part of 2010 was filled with making creatures for the soccer world cup which materialized finally on the opening night and at the closing ceremony of the world cup at soccer city in Johannesburg.

Their design was based on the same principles as that of the creatures made for the Linz festival in

Austria

The opening ceremony was so varied, beautiful, exciting and impressive and for me the highlight was the dung-beetle, created by Roger Titley, which was operated by 8 dancers, 2 of which came from right here, the Garden Route (George and Touwsranten) – their choreographer was Celeste

( a professional dancer from Sedgefield, Garden Route, ref. photo in dungbeetle frame, the leader of the pack).

Whilst this was going on 13 large creatures were being built in the venue at Beyond the Moon farm for the closing ceremony and then trucked to Johannesburg a few days before the ceremony when coaching took place.

‘Movement coaches take each animal, which is basically a skeletal structure that a person can fit into and manipulate and individually train the artist to become one with the creature. They must become the creature they have chosen: walking, acting and looking the part in every possible way;’ said Roger.

Finally, at the closing ceremony, the moment arrived:

walking into the lights of the stadium to a superimposed watering hole, came 13 life-size, lifelike elephants of all sizes. The moment was breathtaking and rather emotional for me.

Natalie Fisher, our movement coach for this event, had done a marvelous job of giving these creatures a lifelike feel (which had some folk fooled for a while – no idea why as the creatures are skeletal and the dancers were clearly visible) Three professional dancers ranging in age from 13 to 30 years trained to simulate lifelike and realistic movement, creating an amazing synergy between the 2 groups of elephants as they came to drink at the water hole….and then it was all over leaving a lasting impression on the minds of over 60000 spectators (and more via the media the world over).

World Economic Forum, Davos Switzerland

The show was rehearsed in Cape Town using local South African talent and choreographer Natalie Fisher and then flown over to Davos the day before the show.

Security was so tight in Davos that unfortunately no photos were taken on the night of the event.

Thanks for all your thoughts and wishes for the performance.

After weeks of perfect weather (photo by Alex Davies) in Linz the skies went dark a few days before the event and the rain came down. Predictions were not good for Saturday.
Astrid and Jessica arrived in the rain Thursday morning.

We had wet rehearsals on Thursday night where we managed our only run through, an extremely chaotic dress rehearsal. At one stage all 200 participants rushed for a small tent without climbing out of their animals. Casualties: one elephant nose dive, 20 broken frames, 30 broken foot controls and 201 sense-of-humour failures. Humour loss not surprising among the participants as some people had spent 4 to 5 hours inside their animals. (photo by Nick Malagas)

Amazingly on Friday about 400 people turned up for a briefing and to walk their day time routes in the rain.

Saturday we woke up to a cool morning with a strong wind and clearing skies. We had every one of the 450 creatures built or repaired and ready for action. (photo by Alex Davies)

By 2pm the wind was still howling and Herons were being ripped from the participants hands in the swirling city gusts. We made the decision to close the route over the exposed Danube Bridge for all animals other than a few low sturdy ones and sent the rest with the big group down Landstrasse.

At 2.30 we started sending the animals into the main square 'Hauptplatz' through three different entrances. I had put together 4 lists of departing times trying to compensate for the speed of the various animals or lack thereof.

The authorities were only stopping the trams at 3pm but I felt there was plenty of space for the early animals in their stations
along the side of the track. I had not compensated for the 1000's of people waiting for them. The animals squeezed into the crowds and there was no space for even a mini when the tram trundled through. There was apparently an amazing show of animal testosterone between the Tram, dinosaurs, rhinos, elephants as they sized each other up for supremacy. The march was very slow through the crowds, the animals seemed to touch a nerve and I had to look hard for a face without a smile. My instructions to the participants to ignore everyone around them was out of the window in 2 minutes as the attention brought out the hidden performer in each and every one of them. The animals kissed children, posed, danced to the music, chatted and generally did everything I feared most. Linz threw my script out of the window and wrote a new one that would have had Walt Disney in tears. it was fantastic!

For the main show the wind dropped and the animals behaved impeccably - Astrid tells me (I couldn't see much of the show from where I was standing).

Creatures of Beyond the Moon

It’s been 2 years since the beginning this exciting project which consumed Roger completely especially throughout the past year. Due to the enormousness of the project Roger involved Chris and Mia in various capacities within the project. They created 40 creatures in a polyethylene foam rubber (something Roger has been dreaming of doing for quite a number of years now) on a small scale, to finally be up-scaled by 10 students from Austria/Linz.

Why Linz? Because Linz hosts a festival, ‘Klangwolke’, annually in order to bring the people of Linz together. For various reasons Roger got involved in tendering for this creative show for Klangwolke and he got the job.

In December 08 the first 2 students from Linz arrived to each be taught to upscale and build 4 of the creatures and take this knowledge back to Linz and teach the public of Linz to build lots more of these same creatures.

The months which followed brought 8 more students at various intervals to our beautiful surrounding, our cottages (mostly River Sanctuary and Kingfisher), to learn about the creation of a further 4 creatures each, which they then took their new-found knowledge home to Linz to aid many more Linzers in building up to plus minus 600 creatures.

A website was created: http://www.linzcreatures.net/s.net/ where people could watch the progress of the project but mainly to guide the participants through the process re ‘the making of’ and the puppeteering.

The students spent a very intense 14 days mostly working but also playing. Evenings were dedicated to relaxation and delicious food either at home or at one of a variety of restaurants in Wilderness. One day of their stay was dedicated to enjoying the great outdoors and doing something fun.

The real work began once the students had left Beyond the Moon farm to go home. The massive job of doing the step by step’s for each creature with photos and wording as well as the nesting of the patterns onto the computer.

Management was needed in Linz, storage rooms scouted for, workshops had to be created, materials sourced, waterjet-cutting of the designs, people hailed to build and puppeteer etc.

It was a crazy time but well worth it. Roger, Chris and Mia spent quite a bit of time abroad setting up, overseeing, guiding and finishing off the process and finally the day of the show arrived.

Jessica and I were invited to be there to see and be a part of the show on the day, the 5th of September 09. It was a fantastic day with all the hard work paying off. The show was great. The people of Linz were blown away. It was simply amazing.

Due to this long process our beautiful Beyond the Moon venue had its doors closed to all events for quite some time now as it was used for the creatures to live in once they were developed.

We are all gladly back on home turf now and with the completion of Linz09 some new, very exciting projects are appearing on the horizon. More about these at a later stage (top secret at present)!

Getting into that Winter feeling

This week was supposed to be a week of rain, gumboots and winter woolies.

It is Wednesday now and we have had a teeny bit of very welcoming rain every day so far. The trees in the forest, the forest floor, the animals, us humans and the lawns all around the farm have been extremely greatful.

The leaves on the trees have lifted and the lawns turned from yellow-brown to green instantly making Beyond the Moon farm look and feel lush and glorious once again. Everything is just lapping up each drop of rain.

Our river has picked up a bit as well, thankfully so.

The temperature dropped noticably this week. It felt like snowy mountain peaks again -really chilly. Brrrr! Talk about winter woolies!!!!

I went to Wilderness this evening to run the regular time-trial. By the time I crossed the finishing line it was overcast and dark and was starting to spit a little. On my way up the Hoekwil pass and homewards a magnificent thunderstorm, which had been brewing all day, struck the area.

Lightning lit up the sky all around. I was spell-bound and in awe of the lightshow unfolding infront of my eyes. Never before have I seen so many lightning bolts strike straight downwards into the earth.

People, walking home from work were leaning into the wind, holding onto their belongings, wanting to be home already...it must have been very scary to be out there at the mercy of the elements!

Thunderstorms are fairly unusual in this region but not altogether unknown.

Arriving at home I collected Jessica from Annie and we dashed into the house as fast as we could. Shew! Safe at last!

A happy thought about a yummy warm crackling fire in the fireplace crossed my mind. This happy thought reminded me to plant a seed:

Metamorphosis at Beyond the Moon farm

Its been a while now since I actually managed to update the blog for Beyond the Moon farm, the reason being that the accommodation has been hugely busy during the season. Only now, that easter has come and gone and things are simmering down a bit, am I finding some time to write.

There have been one or two major changes to the farm:

Unfortunately, to everyones regret, the Friday night Pub nights have been stopped but hopefully this change will not be permanent. We may start again in a while, so lets hold thumbs.

The venue has been closed to weddings and any other functions until further notice/at least for the duration of 2009.

You might be asking: 'Why such drastic measures?'

The answer is simple: 'Roger is busy with a massive creative show for a city in Austria called Linz and is unable to focus on anything else right now.

Thus, the less the distractions the lower the stress-levels and the greater the creatures and the show in the end.

This creative show is something which Roger has dreamt about doing for a long long time. So one could say its a dream come true (never mind the distraction and the stress etc) which will hopefully lead on to greater things later on, hopefully less stressful.

When looking at the bigger picture then Metamorphosis is the word which presently best describes our beautiful farm, Beyond the Moon, in its cocoon-phase, developing into something more beautiful, more brilliant, more productive than it has been up til now. Soon we are ready to fly.

Spring has Sprung

The arum lilies are starting to show again with their white contrasting flowers against the lush green of the surrounding. They are always beautiful to have around and not only to us. Their bulbs and leaves entice the bush pig as well as the porcupine out of the forest as they are obviously a delicacy. Healing: Apparently the leaf is used for drawing septic wounds.

We noticed that the yellowwood trees all have new growth. The vlier has lots of flowers but we have seen them flower for a while already. The pretty orange tubular flowers of the pomegranate tree (indigenous) attract the little honey birds.

Other indigenous plants are also beginning to flower, such as the Wild Iris (Dietes Vegeta), which is a robust plant, but the flowers are of short duration. Healing: Natives apparently grind the roots and mix them with other herbs to form a tonic for animals and small children.

The red-hot Poker (Knifofia) has just shown its last of its bright red and yellow flowers, which push up from among the leaves on long unbranched stems. Healing: The root can be used for female medicine (uterus/fertility) and the sap of the flowers has been used in cosmetics.

Back at home I noticed my most favorite of all plant in flower: ‘Kruidjie roer my nie’ (Melianthus major) It has a long spike of red flowers sticking up above the leaves and can grow to 4m high. Healing: This plant has very strong healing properties and the part used are the leaves.

The leaves are a strong stimulant that needs careful application. Some people have tried to discourage its use in the past because it can be so toxic if wrongly used. Its external use is however safe and can be a lifesaver. Apparently some people have survived serious dog bites by using a plaster made of the crushed leaves on the wound.

It draws out the infection and sterilises the wound. It also works for inflammatory conditions. It is wonderful for the external treatment of stings and insect bites. Asthma patients also get great relief from the allergic condition by taking a bath in a tea from this plant. Stroke and bipolar victims tend to be too sensitive and are a bit like the name of the plant indicates: “don’t touch me” plant. A bath in Melianthus works wonders.

Snake bite, that is the bite of a snake that paralyses the nervous system can cause death through the fact that heart beat and breathing stops. The old usage was to take a piece of the plant stem and put in a cheek. Slowly sucking on this keeps the nerves sufficiently stimulated to survive the crisis caused by the snakebite.

I personally have tried using the crushed leaves on Annie’s arm, which was seriously swollen, very itchy and there was a big blister where an (unknown) spider had bitten her. We applied a large amount of pulp and wrapped the arm up for about 20 hours. By the next morning there was no sign of the swelling, or of the spider bite. I was blown away and convinced of its healing property and ability. (I am a sceptic)

The bulbinella is also flowering now and in comparison to the powerful presence of the Melianthus Major it is a gentle presence in our garden. It too has healing properties especially for the digestive system. (Leaves are used for their gel)

Friday night is Pubnight at Beyond the Moon farm

Friday nights are our big social event for the week. We are actually going out, getting dressed up and all that (into clean clothes, nothing too fancy - we don't even know what fancy is anymore) and its exciting to see some other faces and chat and have a crowd of kids run about and play. This is different to going to an actual pub or restaurant as people mill around and chat and so we all are getting to know each other.

Susan, our trusted helper and preparer for these nights, always manages to bring along the most beautiful flowers which she uses to adorn the various set tables for the night ahead.

By nightfall, when the fires are burning (on cold nights) and the candles are lit and everything is looking festive and inviting, the guests soon come trickling in to relax and chat at the bar or around the fires and to enjoy a simple but delicious meal later on.

The Friday night has proved itself to be a bonus to the local growing community, allowing us to become closer. People from as far afield as Sedgefield, Hoekwil, Wilderness and George have been known to enjoy an evening at the venue and even our Beyond the Moon farm guests join in from time to time.

Tonight was pub night at the venue. Nothing out of the ordinary you might think, but like a breeze of fresh air, Heather and Donald have come back into our midst to run the pub and make those delicious dinners of theirs. They are both very professional in their approach and seem to draw the crowds with their sumptuous food and lovely nature.

We had Lemon and Herb Chicken with creamy mash and a fresh green salad (R30) tonight and for dessert they made us the most delicious Malva Pudding (R15), beautifully presented with a lavender flower on top.

Thank you Heather and Donald for running the pub night again and good luck.

About 30 adults joined in the fun, plus loads of kids, and everyone relaxed and enjoyed themselves. That’s what its all about and makes it worth the effort I would say.

As per usual and true to her nature, Susan, busy, busy, busy, helped set up and prepare and tidy up again at the end. Susan, you are a gem! Thank you!

Maintenance

Dianne, her kids Emily and Aidan, Jessica and I took a stroll around the farm and discovered Ian busy fixing and painting the ‘leaking’ roof of River Sanctuary.

It has been a little inconvenient living around buckets when it rains. Now, at last, RS has a beautifully waterproofed and painted green roof, which blends well into the forest green.

Meanwhile the kids have discovered a fun way to spend their time throwing rocks into the river from the top of the riverbank.

The riverbank, which got seriously washed away during the last flood in November 2007, together with the pump house (the one and only pump which helped us supply all cottages and houses with daily water) and the electrical supply board for the houses in the clearing, is now being painstakingly restored.

We hired a backhoe to clear and widen the riverbed and used a lot of the rock to rebuild the bank.

Then the gabion baskets were beautifully arranged and skillfully filled with river rocks.

Now, the next step is to fill in the gap behind the baskets with some layers of fertile ground and other earth from around the farm and develop a gentle slope over which the future flooding waters could easily and unobstructedly flow. (That’s the theory).

Then we will stabilize.

The Dams in the Clearing

The two dams in the forest clearing have provided us with so much to see and do over the past few years.

Initially, when we got to the farm, both dams were overgrown with bulrushes, a haven for the common moorhen.

Finally the reeds were ‘forcefully’ removed to be, once again, replaced by open water. Sadly the moorhen had to move to another dam where we can't watch her any more.

The open water didn’t last too long as the lilies, which were once planted by a previous owner, began to take over. Meanwhile the bulrushes started to creep in again but with regular maintenance they have been kept out of the dams.

The lilies are very pretty but they are invasive and from time to time someone comes to harvest them. We noticed a very thick grass growing in the deeper dam, which made swimming very difficult and made the decision to place grass-carp into both dams to keep the grass down as well as the lilies.

Now we are able to swim ‘lengths’ (our own Olympic size swimming pool) and throughout the year we, as well as our guests, use the boats to paddle around the vlei, playfully or looking for fish, relaxing.

We have had so very many wonderful visitors to Beyond the Moon farm over the past 10 years and everyone has been able to appreciate their stay in their own way.
